Field Day at Korm 4-H Maize farm

4-H Ghana organized a field day at Korm in the Kilo Krobo district.  The event brought together 21 farmers, 3 Agricultural extension officers,5 teachers, media personnel, 30 4-H club members from Korm L/A school. The purpose of the field visit was to generate market for DuPont Pioneer hybrid seed corn, and encourage community participation of the enterprise garden project.

The 3.5 Acre maize farm was established by Korm L/A Junior high school 4-H club. The group planted 2.5 Acres of Pioneer Hybrid White Maize and 1.5 acres of a local variety called "Mamaba".

Observations were made, and the farmers gave their report. It was marvelous. The pioneer variety was having a giant vegetative structure. There were 2 or 3 cobs per plant. All the seeds that were planted germinated. The colour of the plant were all deep green. The children recorded an avearge of 25 cobs per row.

The local variety "Mamaba", was stunted in growth. The colour of the stem and leaves were pale green colour. only few plants produced cobs, and were smaller in sizes. The children recorded an average of 10 cobs per row.

Mr Francis Clottey,  speaking on the occassion, he said that the Pioneer hybrid Maize is high yielding variety meaning that farmers will have more produce to sell, and raise their income. Mr Ofosu Asamoah, the project coordinator  who was present at the event advised the 4-H club members to take advantage of the Pioneer variety to make money for themselves.

After the maize have matured, the club started facing problems with thieves. 4-H members then decided to harvest the maize fresh.  Mrs love Keteku, a female teacher at the school helped the kids to cook some of the maize, and gave it to the girls to sell. The project coordinator who was on monitoring tour in the district, joined the kids to celebrate the harvest.  Speaking to the members, he was very excited by the innovative ways the  kids were using to market the maize.
